Check out this Slideshow from last year's Bonnaroo composed of a few of my favorite photos and acts. I had a really amazing time, and tickets are quickly running out for this year.

Also, if you are heading to SXSW check out Last.fm's handy Band Aid Group/Application. I noticed a few good recomendations with my account including Bon Iver, Zykos, Asobi Seksu, and a handful of others. Definitely worth a look if you are headed there or just looking for a few good recommendations.

Zykos, an Austin, Tx band, are back in 2007 with new demos. The most prominent of these has to be the new version of "Keep It Light." Much fuller and more mastered than the original, "Keep It Light" could turn out to be a beacon for Zykos' album, whenever they decide to release it. Keep an eye out for Zykos in 2007. Post-Parlo, Myspace or the Official Website (Suspended) will probably have updates when they come out of creative hiatus.

Shearwater released Palo Santo in 2006 on Misra and, since, have been touring everywhere from Europe to Illinois, making a stop at Daytrotter. While no tour dates are currently on the band's website, many blogs have announced their effort towards a SXSW gig, The Hot Freaks!, which will include Shearwater. I found out about this at the last minute, but Tel Aviv are playing a CD release show at The Gypsy in Fayetteville. Not sure about the time, but myspace says 10P (Localist mag says 9P!?) Little Rock natives The Easys released their new full length album, Blood Capsule, December 22nd on Max Recordings. Their sophomore follow up to 2003's The Secrets of Loveliness went on sale at an album release show that night and will probably be added to the Max Recordings Shop sometime soon. Pearls & Brass (Drag City) stop by Little Rock tonight in support of their 2006 release The Indian Tower. It got less than spectacular reviews, but I wouldn't rule this gig out of your plans, especially if you have a thing for the blues and Black Sabbath.

By combining math-rock complexity with raw power, songs like "Tower" and "Black Rock Man" hypnotize as they pulverize. - Entertainment Weekly (How could you not like that?)

Dr. Dog will be making a side stop off of their current tour with The Black Keys to play Fayetteville, Arkansas's own Georges Majestic Lounge. Last time, or actually the first time, Arkansas saw Dr. Dog they played Dickson street at The Gypsy for a college radio back to school party. KXUA has invited them back and you can expect a hearty encore tomorrow, December 6th, at 8:00PM. No word on whether this one is free with a student ID, but $8 is clearly a bargain.

While you are at it you might as well pick up a copy of their latest EP, Takers and Leavers, which I have mentioned before. I have to say I enjoy my copy. The song below is from it.

Flaming Fire are on Silly Bird Records and are releasing (released?) their new album When The High Bell Rings. Apparently you can buy it for $13, but it might be a pre-order, that could get you a deluxe copy if you are one of the first hundred.

Flaming Fire have been called freak-rock, and it seems to be a somewhat fitting description. I'm not sure if the trend will catch on like freak folk and other similar collectives did, but check this out and enjoy it. They also have some kind of illustrated bible project as well.

Catfish Haven - Crazy For Leaving

Catfish Haven played Fayetteville's most unknown venue, The Delicious, Sunday night. Basically The Delicious is a house and now and then bands will play there and its always free with donations for the bands. Usually the acts play in the "Basement", but this one was in the living room. Local band Tel Aviv brought plenty of their fans in for a packed room, and most stayed for Catfish Haven. The set was a good mix of both their EP and Tell Me. Make a note to catch them on tour.

Alternative rock bands Mute Math and Shiny Toy Guns play Rumba Revolution, new sister venue to Little Rock's Stick Fingerz, tonight. Shiny Toy Guns also claim to be playing again on the 16th at Stick Fingerz with Mute Math, but the only confirmation of that has been in a promotional e-mail.

Woven Hand is David Eugene Edwards. Edwards plays what can only be described as dark Christian folk. Woven Hand's latest album Mosaic was recently released and is available at Sounds Familyre.

Metronome is also currently engaged in a covers project much like Bishop Allen's EP project. Metronome releases one cover every week. A few I found interesting were Band of Horses' "The Funeral" and John Lennon's "Isolation." Other artists covered include Sufjan, Spoon, and Joanna Newsom.

Phantom Planet played the University of Arkansas this past Thursday, and brought along a few new songs to test out. I didn't catch any names, but at least four they called new. I have never really caught on to any of the earlier Phantom Planet albums, but their latest self-titled album was one of my favorite high school albums -- I listened to it on my commute for nearly three consecutive weeks.

However, I was a little let down by the live translation of one of my favorite albums, mostly the way 'Big Brat' was played. 'Big Brat' has a great layered guitar effect and it just did not translate well live. Possibly it was where I was standing, but most of the other songs from Phantom Planet sounded more accurate.

It didn't ruin my time entirely, actually I enjoyed the show.

Dr. Dog is currently on Tour supporting The Raconteurs and will soon be supporting The Magic Numbers, and then The Black Keys. They had just enough time to stop off for a college radio show here at the Uof A while the big guys were at ACL this weekend.

I had a camera failure when transferring my pics, loosing nearly 30 or so, and was left with a few poor shots. These two aren't entirely terrible though.

Comets on Fire are a supergroup of sorts, each member coming together from one or more sideproject to make a reverb soaked, improv droning, rock group. Much like Black Mountain there is plenty of comet side grouping to keep any fan busy. One of my favorites is Howlin' Rain, who recently released one of my favorite albums this year.

Clearly Rose Hill Drive have a road ahead of them with the likes of the Black Crowes and Van Halen leting them tour along side, not to mention the fact that they played Bonnaroo and ACL without ever releasing an album.

Rose Hill Drive

Rose Hill Drive announced their news that they had signed with Megaforce/SCI Fidelity Records a few months back and now the date for their debut album has been announced. Rose Hill Drive will release their debut Tuesday August 22nd 2006 in the US with later dates following in the UK and Europe.

Rose Hill Drive are a three piece band from Boulder, Colorado. The members consist of Jacob and Daniel Sproul and Nate Barnes. The guy with the hat in the picture is not in the band. They have become immensely popular in their hometown selling out many shows. This is mainly because of their wonderful covers from the most frequent Led Zeppelin to others like Hendrix, Sabbath, and The Guess Who. Their cover of "Shakin All Over" was on the Stubbs the Zombie soundtrack. They have also have a successful road career opening and touring with bands like Van Halen, the Black Crowes, and soon the Who. Don't mistake these guys as a cover band. Pitchfork Trashes Naked Babes

Naked Babes newly formed collaboration of ex-Test Icicle Devonte Hynes and Tom Vek played their first gig last week, and according to their myspace practiced 1 and a half times this month. Pitchfork probably feels that this was not enough, as they trashed their track "Fuckin' Dumbbell Party".

"Funny how quickly tongue-in-cheek inverts itself when devoid of cleverness or a hook." "What could've been a cool linkup-- bedroom dance-punk meets synth-streaked terror-punk-- comes off as a whiskey-fueled circle jerk of dudes so overwhelmed by ideas they stopped thinking altogether."

Put this down in your book as a half star track unless you haven't had enough Test-Icicles yet. But in that case you might as well pick up their new 2-disc EP Bring Out Your Dead when it is released later this month. It's cool that these guys got together to play a little. However, there is no magic here, just a little fun. It's not all bad though check these out if you like that kind of thing and get more tracks at their myspace.

American Princes have been gaining popularity with the release of their new debut album Less and Less. I have actually seen a few blogs talk about this Little Rock band, and was very excited when I did. The first single "Stolen Blues" was very good, but I think that this song will appeal to a larger audience. It is a very beautiful song and deserves one or two listens. This song rivals Stolen Blues with its greatness factor, but in reality sounds like it could be from a different band altogether.

So me and a couple of buddies took a road trip up to Joplin, Mo to see local favorites Lucero. They probably played one o f the best concerts I have ever been to in my entire life early this year at Dickson Street Theater in Fayetteville. It was actually the biggest show ever until a show at a University passed it up just a week later. This concert, however, was not of the quality of Lucero in Arkansas. Add together a small crowd and a bad venue and the show is bound to end mediocre.

The problem however was when we got there we found out that it was a Christian owned venue. So that of course meant no alcohol. We actually got in trouble for that out in the parking lot after the show by some guy with a flashlite, but Ben was with us so its not like they are going to mess with the lead singer of the band.

He was real cool about taking requests and then talking to us afterwards. He let us know they were playing a show in Fayetteville at the end of their current tour and told us to be there. We of course will be.

Check them out here in Arkansas either the 27th at The Sound Stage of Conway or the 28th at Dickson Theater of Fayetteville. I'll finally take some real pictures of these guys for you next time. Hope you like that cameraphone pic up top.

I finally got my copy of Bishop Allen's February EP in the mail today. Hopefully the band has everything sorted out for March like they said they do.

Well, February was a little bit of a let down to me. I put it in and was expecting some really great work, but didn't find was I wanted. Now this was in no way a bad EP, just lesser than January and "The Monitor" (IMHO). Songs like "The Monitor" and "The Bullet and BigD" seem to be the kind of thing that I like to hear from Bishop Allen. Hopefully "The Monitor" is a good indication for March. Thanks for the early look YANP.

607 (AKA Adrian Tillman) is Little Rock born and raised. People In Planes played a great little show the other night at local hotspot Juanita's. There was a massive crowd mostly there for Blue October, but the show was very well worth the crowd. I underestimated the number of people that would be at this show so the pictures are a little lacking as I was not very near the front, but they will probably get the job done. Everybody that runs a blog has probably gotten the email from People in Planes, but the publicist also was promoting a band called The Exit and their 2005 release,Home For An Island. I didn't think much of this band when I first heard it, but they are starting to grow on me.

Now I had a hard time deciding whether I should have gone to this concert, and the answer was yes I should, but I should have left immediately after they were done playing. The problem was this was an all ages show featuring a crappy emo band. Now not only were there to many people there, but I was nearly the tallest tin the crowd. Have I mentioned I can not stand emo kids?

Anyways, The Exit put on a good and exciting show. I was also unaware that they played live with a saxophonist. The set started with a duet featuring the bassist/vocalist and the keyboardist from Straylight Run. They then progressed into a hefty set including highlights like "Back to the Rebels", "Don't Push", and "Pressure Cooker". If you like rock at its finest I recommend these guys all emo aside. I'm not ripping on Straylight either, rather The Spill Canvas. Note to Self: Avoid Emo Bands!

Maritime + Aloha @ Vino's Brew Pub 3-19-06

Not very many showed up for this little concert at Vino's Brew Pub on a Sunday night. Vino's is a great little pizza joint/brewery that lets you bring in jugs that you purchase from them to have filled with you favorite variety of beers they make themselves, not to mention the pizza is superb. They also bring in great entertainment for the backroom, and hardley charge as much as other venues.

Maritime started the show out with a small set. Only about 15 or 20 people showed for this gig and Maritime wasn't feeling it so much and I think their performance suffered slightly. Much more, I only truly liked one song from the set and that was the one that I featured back with the news of Maritime releasing their new album. They had the limited press blue vinyl for sale with them.

Aloha followed with a longer set and to me a much more pleasing show. They have been getting a lot of hype in my opinion, and their inclusion at SXSW, the Stereogum showcase, and the numerous amount of blogging that has gone on is waranted. Really a larger crowd would suit to create a better mood, but they played well enough to keep my attention.

Grand Serenade

Back on the 10th Grand Serenade and Sugar and the Raw played a great little set at the downtown Little Rock Public Theater. Needless to say I drove home for this little dandy of a concert. Grand Serenade and Sugar and the Raw, Zombies favorites, usually draw larger crowds, but for some reason this little publicized show was populated by only around 30 people. It was a great little show that the bands set up. What makes a concert better, usually beer, but this was a BYOB. That didn't inhibit this little gig as everybody brought their own goodies.

Sugar and the Raw played first giving a great collection of songs, and definitely playing a great show. Grand Serenade followed them with a great run through their discography. Sadly they didn't play many of my favorite oldies.

Taking a Look Back: A Clockwork Orange Soundtrack

A Clockwork Orange is not only one of my all time favorite movies, but it also delivered one of the best soundtracks out there. I'm not going to ignore the fact that this movie came out before I was even born, but I really like the way it was done and wish movies these days would take note and put more purpose into the script. I guess they could always add a little rape, ultra-violence, and Beethoven also.

Off of the topic of the movie, this soundtrack is superb. An excellent selection of Beethoven is included, along with other classics like Singing in the Rain and I Want To Marry A Lighthouse Keeper. The juxtaposition of these tracks with the eerie and bizarre work of Walter Carlos create one of my favorite soundtracks and a very memorable one as well.

Next We have Little Rock shows. Now I have tickets to these, but am to lazy to drive home tonight and I have a test tomorrow. Ted Leo / Rx with The Duke Spirit and Les Aus are at Vino's Brew Pub, and there is an aftershow featuring my favorites Man Man at Whitewater Tavern. I highly recommend Man Man if you are 21 and can get in.

Man Man played last night in Springfield, Mo. This is the first time that I have ever seen them play, and to tell the truth I wasn't a fan until this last album. Six Demon Bag, however, is one of my favorite albums right now, and the show was everything that I could have expected and more. If you are a fan of the album, imagine, if you can, the intensity and strangeness that is a Man Man song and multiply that by al least five times and you have a Man Man performance. To top the intense, loud, and crazy performance add in the outfits that these guys put on. At this gig, I'm not certain about others they wore all white clothes, some accenting it with headbands, not to mention they all have facial hair. I also have you mention how much I liked the venue. Make sure to catch some more shows at the Randy Bacon Gallery if you are near Springfield.

If you like noise in your music, but feel you are missing something by the performers not expressing themselves, you will love the voices Man Man does. Take a listen to a couple songs and then pick up the full album you will not be disappointed.

Sugar And The Raw are a Little Rock band that has gained a lot of popularity among the scenesters and music goers. Locals S&TR are on also local label Max Recordings and released their debut album Translucent last April to mass appeal, giving a copy to every member of the audience at the release party. They started out as more of a party band, but with the release of their album, have turned their music into something worth your listen. Locksley is a four-piece rock and roll band, in the grand tradition. Hailing

Measles Mumps Rubella have released their new album, and I think a 7.9 from pitchfork would be considered as a rating of approval. This song Algorithm of Desire seems to me to be what makes MMR so great. This is one of my new favorite songs and I like nearly everything about it. I probably listened to it 8 times after the first listen. What creates a great element of the song is the breathing added to the singers vocals. I do love my dance-punk music and this song is a new favorite. Recommended for fans of !!! or just dance -punk in general. Hopefully the rest of the album, Fantastic Success, is as good. I just received my advanced copy of People In Planes' Album, As Far As The Eye Can See..., in my mailbox today. I actually like it a lot more than I originally thought I would. Pitchfork released news today about the UK band Field Music. First things first, their self titled album will be issued here in the US April 4 with a bonus track, "You're Not Supposed To". Mark that and the new list of US dates including Chicago, SXSW, and California. Make sure and check these guys out if you have the chance, and pick up the album when it is released. You might know these guys from their contacts and work with Maximo Park.

So it snowed like crazy here this weekend and I was not able to make it to any concerts. Thank God I didn't leave. I would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere. It really made me angry that I had to miss Eagle*Seagull.

Man Man and Destroyer albums come out tommorow. Pitchfork reviews both.

SXSW has mp3s for all of their artists. I'm sure you've seen everyone recommend their favorites.

Make sure to pick up a copy of The Weatherman on DVD.

The Streets | Gold Streets

The Streets new album was announced along with the first single, "When You Wasn't Famous". I'm not very fond of the song, but maybe the rest of the album will be better. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan, but do enjoy some of The Streets' work.

Now for another Streets, Gold Streets. This band is in an entirely different genre, but I am enjoying what I am hearing. They are a Rock/Indie/Psychedelic band , but not as much as you could expect. They are much more mellow playing smooth moody songs, yet still entertaining.

Hailing from New York, Gold Streets have recently self released their first Ep and is available directly from the band. Not much else is told about Gold Streets, but you can also stream another song and learn some more on their Myspace. This excerpt about the Ep is much more profound than anything I could ever say.

Sonically rich with throbbing basslines and pulsing waves of guitar, Gold Streets' new EP, "Red," also evokes fellow New York bands such as Straylight Run and stellastarr*. Opening track "Red" draws the listener in with soaring guitar howls and drums that crash overhead. The albumÂs centerpiece, "Opposition," begins with a slow confession and builds to a soaring, multi-layered climax. "Right Now" opens with a stoic bassline, adding elements and effects one by one, like a jigsaw puzzle taking shape, only to disassemble itself at the end. A mere five songs is too short to fully experience all that Gold Streets has to offer, but with any luck, a full length follow up isn't too far behind.

Arkansas Artists Volume Two: Grand Serenade

Grand Serenade are one great indie/pop band from Little Rock, Ar. They seem kind of mysterious on first inspection as there is not much to be found about them online. One might even think that they do not exist anymore as the last release I've seen was in 2004, but these guys are still around, touring, and opening shows for really great bands including Of Montreal, Eagle*Seagull this Friday, and others.

..."If their live show is anywhere near as good as their CD (which I can't stop spinning), Grand Serenade might just steal the show. Heck, they might just steal your date. This aptly named group cleaves to the melodic and romantic end of the garage-rock spectrum. I'd love to say more about this band, but with such limited information there is not much to say. You can hit them up on myspace or do your best to find more information. The Ep is not available anywhere that I know except local record stores, like Anthro-Pop, who would probably mail one to you. The band might be able to help you too. You can also see them play this Friday at Hendrix College in Conway, Ar at 9:00. They are opening for Eagle*Seagull and The Deathray Davies. Let me know what you think in the comments.
